About Transportation
The Transportation Competition tasks teams with solving a realistic transportation engineering problem using analysis, design, and planning techniques. Each year, a different scenario related to traffic operations, roadway design, or transportation planning are given and students must develop practical, innovative solutions. Teams are typically given traffic data sets, roadway layouts, and design constraints. Using this information, they perform calculations, create conceptual or detailed designs, and evaluate different solutions based on cost, safety, and efficiency. This competition emphasizes the practical applications of transportation engineering principles and mirrors what what engineers do in professional practice; collecting and analyzing data, weighing trade-offs, and developing solutions that balance safety, efficiency, and community impact.
